About
Steffen Maas, the director and creator of all ABC LORA imagery and products, has lived in Aruba for a long time and is now living and working in the Netherlands. For many years he has practiced illustration, photography and graphic design. Steffen has designed numerous books and exhibitions, while teaching at several art academies at home and abroad. He also teaches ‘visual storytelling’ workshops at several universities in China.
Steffen is the founder and designer of ArubABC, BonABC and CurABC – a striking design and language project that teaches children and adults about the culture and language of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The books are much appreciated by local educators as well as other island inhabitants and visiting tourists. Likewise he created ChinABC about Chinese culture (together with Zhou Li), and he applied the same concept to 7 main regions of the United States.
Adjacent to the ABC Books that focus on reading and sharing local culture, LORA offers visual learning materials, which are on the one hand theme based and hyper-contextual, on the other hand displaying universal qualities and recognition.
Mi Buki di Aruba, Mi Buki di Boneiru, Mi Buki di Kòrsou,
The books picture many vivid aspects of the Island cultures, by clear and colourful drawings of unique birds and animals, monuments and sites, persons, food, flora and music culture. Under each drawing you can read the common words or local names in Papiamento (Aruba) or Papiamentu (Bonaire and Curaçao) as well as its English and Dutch translations. No matter if you are living in one of the ABC islands or if you are a curious passer-by, the books welcome you to connect with the character and language of the islands. Also when you are a parent, a grandparent or a teacher, Mi Buki helps you to teach your children about Aruba, Bonaire or Curaçao and enjoy Papiamento together.
